Understanding AddictionBarbiturates are a class of medications that have had beneficial medical effects. They were a popular drug of abuse for a short time, but are rarely abused on the streets anymore. Other drugs became available that provided similar effects but had much less side effects, and were much less dangerous, primarily the benzodiazepines. The barbiturates are still used medically at safe doses to prevent seizures and control withdrawals from other drugs.
